毎日使える簡単 phrasal verbs ⑧

日常会話の中でどれだけたくさんの phrasal verbs が使われているか！それらが聴き取れなければ日常会話はオボつきません。バイリンガル並みの英会話力を目指されるのであれば、listening と speed になれることが不可欠です。(youcan2020.comへ)

今回は趣向を変えて米国で大人気に Ellen Show で勉強してみましょう！次の動画に出てくる phrasal verbs や idiom や collocations を使えるようになりましょう！

1 New Year’s Resolutions 新年の誓い a promise you make to yourself to change a bad behavior or accomplish a goal in the new year：例文 My new year’s resolution is to speak more English at work. * to keep a resolution or to break a resolution も同時に覚えましょう！

2 fewer hands are going up より少ない手が上がってる → 前より手が上がらないわね！*few は可算名詞に使われ、その比較級が  fewer です。

3 get around はグズグスする to procrastinate, to be lazy, to finally do something that you’ve intended to do for a long time. の意味になります。前置詞 around は同じところをグルグル回っている感じを表します。

例文 I finally got around to finishing that book you gave me last year.

* 出来るだけ先延ばしする procrastinate の例文です。The funny thing is that Ellen procrastinated her resolution to stop procrastinating. エレンは先延ばしはやめようという誓いを先延ばしした！

4 keep someone busy どうでもいいことをやらせる to give someone things to do. 例文 I tried to keep myself busy reading so I wouldn’t get bored. 本でも読もう！退屈しないように！と努めた。

5 come up with 考えや言い訳などを思いつく to invent, develop or think of something です。例文 You can come up with a name for a child. 

6 hungover 二日酔い the state in which you are after drinking too much *名詞でも動詞でも使えます！例文 the best hangover cure is a Bloody Mary.

7 hypothetical は起こるかもしれない仮定の意味：例文 Can ask you a hypothetical question? What would we do on our trip if we get sick? *発音はハイポセティカルです。

8 jeez ジーズと読みます。*驚き、怒り、迷惑などに！used to express feelings such a surprise, anger, annoyance, etc.

9 keep up with 遅れないようについて行く、間に合うように手当てする to do anything necessary to be able to accomplish something at the desired or ideal speed

10 have faith in someone 何かやってくれそうな人だと信用する to trust someone will do something：例文 I have faith in you I know you will try your best. * Ellen は a little more faith in me といっていますので、私のこともう少し信用してくれてもいいのよ！と笑いを誘っています。

11 quit men 男を断つの意味です。* we commonly use quit with vices and bad habits like quit smoking or quit drinking. ということのようです。バイス vice とは bad habit のことです。つまり女性が男を断つというとその女性にとっては男が悪い癖ということになるので jokeとして面白いのです。

12 anything short of my own death 自分の死に勝るものはない She means that her death is the only thing that would stop her from watching the show. * short は短いというより足りないという感じです。死ぬまでやめられない！という感覚が出てます。

13 have priority in order 優先順位をつけて * if you go on a shopping spree while knowing that you don’t have enough money to pay your bills or buy food. It means that you don’t have your priorities in order. spree とは散財、じゃんじゃん買いまくることです。

14 good for you 相手の合格や成功に「頑張ってね」という意味です。例文 You passed your exam. Good for you! * an expression of approval or support for someone success だそうです。

これだけ勉強してもう一度最初から skit を聴いてみてください。断然聴こえ方が違うと思います。

いくら phrasal verbs は無限にあるといっても諦める必要はありません。便利なものだけを自分のものにすればいいのです。必ず例文で覚えるのがオススメで丸暗記しようとしても頭に入ってきません。(youcan2020.comへ)

今日は look を使った phrasal verbs です。次の動画を参考に、基本的な使い方をおさらいして、使えるようにしましょう！

1 look up は先ず見上げる to see the skyという意味です。to look up at the sky. 次いで調べる to get the meaning of the word の意味になります。look up in the dictionary  その次 3 番目の意味が情勢が好転するのを見守る to start to be more positive です。You can look up the situation changing. 4 つ目の意味が尊敬する to respect の意味です。Look up to your parents.

2 look down は見下ろす to look down in the ground が第一の意味で、次いで look up の反対、見下すという意味があります。You look down on them. 

3 look over は文字通り見渡すの意味。 I could look over the fence. 第 2 の意味がチェックする to check です。I wrote an essey. I want him to look it over and check it.

4 look in on は気をつける to keep an eye out  for somebody です。Please look in on my plants. 世話をする look after とは少し違います。

5 look after は世話をする to take care of ですが、Look after my dog. のようにもう少し世話の度合いが高まります。Look in my dog. とはいいません。 

6 look through は詳しく調べる、入念にチェックする to inspect, to look for detailed things です。look over に少し似ていますが、チェックの度合いがより詳しくなります。police が調べるのは、look through です。They looked through the garbage. 前述の look over はざっとチェックする to skim it very quickly くらいの感覚です。

7 look into はまさに調査する to investigate です。I’m going to look into the problem.

8 look out は気を付ける  to be careful, to be aware です。Look out! 次に look out for となると何かが起こりそうな時のちょっと見て！to pay attention to です。

9 look around は文字通り見回す to move your eyes around the place, to brouse, to really look to buy anything です。Can I help you? No, I’m just looking aroud.

イシグロ作品：第５弾は「浮世の画家」です！

カズオ・イシグロ作品を読んでみよう！48

カズオ・イシグロ作品第 5 弾は「 浮世の画家 An Artist of the Floating World 」です。この作品は 1986年に出版された直後から英国で大好評を博し、Whitbread Book Awards 賞を獲得しています！続いてイシグロは 89 年出版の「日の名残り」で英国で最も権威あるブッカー賞 Booker Prize を獲得することになりますが、なぜかくも英国で評判となったのか、興味は尽きません。(youcan2020.comへ)

イシグロ氏の作品は難しすぎる、色々考えさせられるといった感想をお持ちの方が多いと思いますが、日本語訳でこの作品を読むと作者は日本人に違いないと思えるくらいの仕上がりです。翻訳の素晴らしさもあり、カズオ・イシグロ作品が一層身近に感じられるのではないでしょうか！

時代によって価値観が変わる！戦前・戦時中と戦後で全ての価値観が大きく変わってしまった中で主人公の老画家小野益次が生き様を振り返った末に悟るものは！テーマは戦中戦後にとどまらず、古い価値観の中で精一杯戦ってきた老いぼれの新たな生き様を見つめるという点で不変であるのではという気がします。私には何か曖昧で明快でない場面がいくつもありましたが、かえってその曖昧さがイシグロ作品の深さ、広がり、良さであるような気がします。不思議な感覚に襲われます。

さて、前置きが長くなりましたが、私は翻訳物を読むとき、カタカナ書きされた長い名前を読むのが苦手なのですが、「浮世の画家」に登場する名前は全て漢字表記となっています。今回は翻訳書から原文の書き振りを探っていこうと思います。最初の出だしからいくつか書き出してみました。

1 ためらい橋：the Bridge of Hesitation*長崎に思案橋というのがありました。

2 瓦葺の屋根：the roof with its elegant tiles*瓦は原文では tiles でした。

3 どんな大金持ちが住んでいるのだろうと首をかしげるであろう：you may find yourself wondering what sort of wealthy man owns it.*首をかしげるは単に wondering の訳でした。

4 気位の高そうな白髪の女性がふたり：two haughty, gray-haired ladies * haughty の発音はホーティです。

5 ただの儀礼訪問ではございません：they had not come simply out of courtesy

6 ご人徳をセリにかけさせていただくということでございます：What we mean to do from here on is to conduct an auction of prestige. *ご人徳は prestige の訳でした。

7 美術愛好家：an art enthusiast

8 木目の美しさ：the beauty of their grains * grain は穀物の粒ですが、木材や岩、なめし革の木目、きめ、はだの意味もあります。

9 母屋：the main body of the house *母屋の原文は main body でした。

10 お座なりのお悔やみを一言つぶやいただけで：She gave only the briefest of commiserations *お座なりのは the briefest でした。

11 重い障子を開けて：moved aside the heavy scleen * 障子は scleen でした。

このように日本語訳から原文を想像しながら読むというのもなかなか面白いと思いますがいかがでしょうか！色々な楽しみ方があるものです！

昨年の全米に続き、大坂なおみが全豪オープンのシングルス決勝へ！match point のサーブがまさかの out の判定、すぐにチャレンジを要求し、ギリギリの in が認められると飛び上がって喜びを爆発、そのチャーミング度にファンも大喜び！決勝進出を決めた後のコート脇でのインタビューでも彼女の魅力がまたまた炸裂！是非じっくりと英語で味わってください。楽しいですよ！

1 (正直カロリーナ Karolína Plíšková が第２セットを取った時、どう思ってたの？) Yeah I mean a kind of expected it a little. Because I played her so many times and honestly she beat me more than I beat her. So I was expecting a really hard battle and I just told myself to regroup in the third setting no matter what just try as hard as I can and I managed to win so.

毎日使える簡単 phrasal verbs ①

語彙、表現力、コミュニケーション力を爆発的に増強するにはイディオム phrasal verbs を使いこなせるようになることが不可欠です。phrasal verbs とは動詞と前置詞 (副詞) の組み合わせで色々な意味に使える便利な動詞のことです。ですが、嫌になるほど a daunting inventory の種類の phrasal verbs があるのも事実です。(youcan2020.comへ)

1 get up や 2 put off の意味はご存知だと思いますが、「起きる」「延期する」と丸暗記するのではなく、前置詞 (副詞)の感覚をつかむことで飛躍的に上手く使いこなせるようになれます。

例えば、前置詞や副詞として使われる up の意味は「上の方へ」off は「〇〇から離れた」という感覚です。この感覚がわかれば、get up は「体を起こす」という感覚です。この感覚を日本語にすれば「起きる」となります。これがわかれば 3 wake up！ との違いも自然にわかります。この「起きろ」は目を覚ませという感覚です。まぶたが up すると覚えてもいいでしょう！

put off は「離れた別のところに置く」なので日程や予定を「延期する」という意味で使うことができます。今回からできる限りたくさんの phrasal verbs を攻略し、英会話能力を飛躍的に上達させていきましょう！

体の部位の続きです。外国人の友人や知り合いができると骨折、捻挫、筋肉痛等々の話題も頻繁に出てきます。1 度目を通しておけば、相手が言った時、こちらが言おうとした時にあれだなと思えます。すぐに出てこなくても良いのです。VoiceTra や GoogleTranlate ですぐに調べられますから！
