面白い英語と日本語のギャップを味わってください。お盆の茶器：the tea things on the tray、 お茶をついだ：helped herself to more tea from the pot、入れる：to pour the tea、風呂敷包み：the folded scarf、 畳：the tatami、 防空壕：tunnels、 急須：tea pot、 うどん屋の三和土(たたき)：the forecourt of her noodle shop などなど、tatami は英語なんですね！ノーベル賞作家が使っていると安心です。

カズオ・イシグロの「遠い山なみの光 A Pale View of hills 」の第 4 章です。義父の緒方さんと二郎が将棋をさしながら、松田重夫という男と戦後の教育論議に発展、戦後の民主主義を皮肉る様子を悦子が聞き入っています。
面白い英語訳も上げておきます。将棋盤：a chess-board、茶の間：the living room、扇風機：the electric fans メンデルスゾーン：Mendelssohn メンデルスンの発音とアクセントに注意！などなど！定冠詞の使い方も面白いです。
①二郎は会社で汗水たらしてるのに、私は彼が帰ってきたときの将棋の作戦を練っている。Jiro sweating away in his office and I am preparing a game of chess for when he comes home. *「〇〇のときのために」という言い方も覚えておくと便利です！スペイン語でも para cuando で ok です。
②その晩、夕食の後で二郎と父親は将棋を指し始めた。Jiro and his father settled down to their game of chess. * settled down は スペイン語では単に se sentaron en su juego de ajedrez. と訳すくらいでしょう。
③「困ったもんだな。しかし今の日本にゃ、若い者に影響を与えるものが多すぎる。今の若い連中は、みんな思想だの理論だのに押し流されている」“A great pity. But then there are so many things in Japan today to sway a young man. So many young men these days get carried away with ideas and theories. * get carried away で流されるという雰囲気が出ている。A great pity は Una gran pena で ok です。
④「亭主と細君が別々の党に投票したという話さ。二、三年前なら考えられなかったことだ。アメリカから熱心に学んだものが、全ていいとは限らない」“About him and his wife voting for different parties. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable. These things we’ve learnt so eagerly from the Americans, they aren’t always to the good.” * unthinkable をこんな風に使うのは面白い。下線部をスペイン語にすると Hace unos años eso hubiera sido impensable. となります。
⑤「例えば、日本は神様が造った国だなんて教えられて。日本は神の国で、最高の民族だなんてね。教科書は隅から隅まで暗記させたれたし。無くなってもいいものだってあるんじゃないかなあ」I remember being taught all about how Japan was created by the gods, for instance. Some things aren’t such a loss, perhaps.” *こういう言い回しは覚えておくと外国人に説明するときに便利です。I remember being taught の表現も勉強になります。

VOA の新しい Let’s Learn English シリーズ Level 2 の lesson 20 The Test Drive です。直接話法 direct speech と間接話法 reported speech についてです。ただ単純に、たった今「〇〇といった」という場合には、that で繋げるだけで、わざわざ時制を一致させる必要もありません。
Anna, Penelope and Rick are making a news story about the Washington Car Show. Anna is having a lot of fun — maybe too much fun… アナはペネロペやリックと一緒に自動車ショーの収録に行きますが、面白すぎて大変なことに！
1 She said that we need to show lots of cars. → Ella dijo que tenía que mostrar muchos autos. *スペイン語の場合、主動詞の時制が過去であれば、reporting clause の動詞は、一つ遡り、自動的に過去形、または大過去形になります。tener que は have to の意。
2 People all over town are saying that if you like cars, this is the place to be. → La gente de toda la ciudad dice que si te gustan los autos, este es el lugar para estar. *普通は reporting clause の内容を that で結べば okです。
3 I was told that I could drive this course. → Me dijeron que podía conducir este curso. * reporting clause の動詞が can, must, have to の場合には必ず could, might, had to となります。
4 She asked if/whether I liked the Washington Car Show. → Ella me preguntó si me gustaba el Washington Car Show. * Yes か No を期待する疑問文の場合、主動詞は say ではなく ask となります。また、 that ではなく if/whether で reporting clause を結びます。スペイン語では si を使います。
カズオ・イシグロの「遠い山なみの光 A Pale View of hills 」の第 3 章です。自殺した娘の景子を身ごもっていた頃の遠い記憶の中で、母娘佐知子と万里子の記憶がよみがえり、重なり合います。
①こういう記憶もいずれは曖昧になって、今思い出せることは事実と違っていたということになる時が来るかもしれない。It is possible that my memory of these events will have grown hazy with time, that things did not happen in quite the way they come back to me today.

VOA の新しい Let’s Learn English シリーズ Level 2 の lesson 18, Flour Baby, Part 2 です！再帰代名詞reflexive pronoun使い方の Part 2 です。この Lesson の解説はあまり馴染みがないかも知れません。スペイン語にしてみても微妙に違います。
Professor Bot の解説は good です。We use a reflexive pronoun when it refers to the subject of a sentence or clause. But we DON’T use a reflexive pronoun with prepositions of place.
1 I was making myself a salad. → Me estaba preparando una ensalada. スペイン語では再帰動詞を使う感じです。 2 While I was making myself dinner, I put Baby next to me. → Mientras me preparaba la cena, puse al bebé a mi lado. スペイン語では「私の隣」にという表現になるでしょう。
3 You should be very proud of yourself. → Deberías estar muy orgulloso de ti mismo. *スペイン語では mismo, mismos を使います。
4 You should be ashamed of yourself. → Deberías estar avergonzado de ti mismo.
