You can 2020 は来たる4月19日で丸2年を迎えます。これまで語学は苦手だったけど東京オリンピックまでにはどうにか「やりなおし英語」に挑戦してみたい、多言語ボランティアや外国人おもてなしに参加してみたいというみなさんに重点を置いてきました。少し英語に自信が出てくると更にスペイン語の学習はぐんと楽に、楽しくなります。

① The Clarkson familylived in the country near Cambridge, about half a mile from the nearest village and about a mile from the river. クラークソン一家のお話でケンブリッジの近くに住んでいます。
② They had a big, old house with a beautil garden, a lot of flowers and many old trees. クラークソン一家の古い邸宅は大きくて綺麗な庭があります。
③ One Thursday morning in July, Jackie came in from the garden. She was a tall, fat moman, thirty years old.ある7月の木曜の朝、ジャッキーが庭から駆け込んできます。彼女は背が高くて小太りの30歳の女性です。
④ It was the hottest day of the year, but she wore a warm skirt and yelow shirt. She went into the kitchen to get a drink of water. 一年で最も暑い日でしたが、彼女は暖かいスカートと黄色のシャツを着ていました。水を飲みに台所へ入って行きました。
⑤ Just then the phone rang. ‘Cambridge 1379,’ Jackie said. ‘Hello. This is Diane. I went to talk to Mother. その時電話がなりました。ジャッキーが「ケンブリッジ1379番です」と答えると「こちらダイアンよ。お母さんと話したいの」
⑥ ‘Mother isn’t here,’ Jackie said. ‘She’s at the doctor’s.‘ ‘Why? What’s wrong?’「お母さんはいないわ」とジャッキーが答えます。「今お医者さんのところなの。「なぜ？どこか悪いの？」
⑦ ‘Nothing’s wrong,’ Jackie said. ‘Why are you tele-phoning? You are going to come this weekend? Mother wants everyone to be come.’「どこも悪くないわ」ジャッキーが答えます。「なぜ電話して来たの？週末来れるの？お母さんはみんなに来て欲しいって」
⑧ ‘Yes, I want to come,’ Diane said. ‘I’m phoning because I have no money for the train ticket.’「行くつもりよ」ダイアンが言います。「でも電車の切符を買うお金がないので電話してるの」
⑨ ‘No money! Mother is always giving you money!”This phone call is very expensive,’ Diane said coldly.「お金がない！お母さんはいつも渡しているじゃない」「この電話もとても高いのよ！」ダイアンが冷たく言います。
⑩ ‘Tell Mother please. I need the money.’ Jackie put the phone down. She took a cigarette from her bag and began to smoke. 「お願いだからお母さんに言って。お金がいるって」ジャッキーは電話を切り、バッグからタバコを取り出し吸い始めました。

さて Lesson 30 : 川で揺られて Rolling on the river のあらすじです。Anna plans to have a dinner party. She needs to buy seafood, so she goes to the waterfront. She gets a surprise at the fish market. アナはディナーパーティを計画中。シーフードを探しに海岸通にやってきます。魚市場でサプライズが待ってます。
❶ Washington, D.C. sits on the Potomac River.
ワシントン DC はポトマック川にあります。* sit on という言い方は雰囲気が出ています。
❷ How much money can you spend? どのくらいお金が使えますか？→予算は？
❸ many ears of corn-on-the-cob：corn when cooked and eaten straight from the cob – the part of corn that the kernels grow on; an ear of corn *an ear of corn はとうもろこしの実一個のことです。カブ cob はとうもろこしの芯の部分、kernel はコメ、麦などの一粒のことで食べられる部分です。
❹ waterfront：the land or the part of a town next to the water of an ocean, river or lake. *ウオーターフロントとは海、川、湖の水に近い土地や街並みのことです。
さて Lesson 31 : Take me out to the ball game のあらすじです。Anna wants to go to see a baseball game. The question is: what is the fastest way for her to get there? Her friends Jonathan and Ashley give her advice. アナは野球を見に行きます。問題はどうすれば早く着けるかです。彼女の友達がアドバイスしますが！！
❶ Don’t take the bus. A taxi is faster than a bus.
バスはダメ！タクシーがバスより早い！
❷ I am at home plate. I wait for the pitch. The ball comes. I swing. It’s a hit! I run to first base. ホームベースに立つ、投球を待つ、ボールが来る、スイングする、ヒットだ、一塁に走る。

さて Lesson 28 : I passed it! のあらすじです。Anna tells her roommate, Marsha, about the problems she had in her driving test. Then Anna says she wants to drive to a special place in Washington, D.C. Where will she drive? アナは最初の運転免許試験でうまく行かなかった思い出があるようです。ワシントンDCで特別な場所へ行きたいようです。どこへ行くのでしょうか？
ドライブに必要な表現がたくさん出てきます。英語で独り言って言えますか？

さて Lesson 29 : A long time ago! のあらすじです。Anna and Marsha have a lot of work to do. An advertisement makes them remember their childhood dreams. What do you think they wanted to be? アナとマァシャはやることが一杯。一つの広告が子供時代の夢を思いださせます。一体彼らは何になりたかったのでしょうか？身の上話を英語でして見ましょう！

ちょっと前の映画の名作を You tube でたくさん見ることができます。一気に Tom Hunks の映画を見まくる binge-watchedというのはいかがですか！一挙に語彙力が増強されますよ！インターネット漬け hyperconected な 1 日になることと思いますが！
英語が話せない Tom が登場する Spielberg 監督の The Terminal という映画です。多分ご覧になった方も多いかと思います。英語が話せなくてもこれだけコミュニケーションが取れ、友達がたくさんでき、人を感動させることができるのです。この You Tube には字幕もありません！ちょっと listening に自信のない方は下の Wikipedia から次の plot を参考にして楽しんでください。 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terminalです。
Plot
❶Viktor Navorski, a traveler from Krakozhia, arrives at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, only to find that his passport is suddenly no longer valid (突然無効になった) due to the sudden outbreak of a civil war (内戦) in his homeland.
❷As a result, the United States no longer recognizes Krakozhia as a sovereign nation (主権国家), and he is no longer permitted to either enter the country or return home as he is now considered to be stateless.
❸Due to his inability to communicate in proper English, the airport’s branch of the US Customs and Border Protection(税関と入管）seize both his passport and airline ticket, whereupon its temporary director, Frank Dixon, makes him stay in the terminal he came through.
❹Left with no other choice, Viktor decides to settle in at a closed off section of the terminal, Gate 67, with only his luggage and a peanut can, soon making a home out of it. Much to the frustration of Dixon, who is being considered for promotion to director of the US Customs branch, Viktor chooses not to break out of the terminal but wait patiently until he can legally enter the United States.
❺Dixon, who wants him to illegally (不法に) attempt to enter the country so he can deport (国外追放する)him, decides to try finding ways to make it difficult for him to survive in the terminal, slowly becoming obsessed in doing so.
❻During his initial days at the terminal, Viktor encounters and helps out a flight attendant named Amelia Warren after she slips on a wet floor and breaks the heel of her shoes, who assumes he is a contractor of sorts from the pager (ポケットベル) he was given by Customs but is surprised by his respectful kindness to her.
❼When Viktor is unable to secure himself some food after Dixon cuts him off from an avenue of money (お金を得る手段), his plight (苦境) is noticed by a food service worker at the airport, Enrique Cruz, who offers him food in exchange for helping in learning more about an immigration officer that he is infatuated with (夢中になっている), Dolores Torres.
❽After meeting with Amelia once again and wanting to take her out for a meal, Viktor begins improving his English while attempting to find work, and is soon hired by an airport contractor and paidunder the table (内緒で支払う) after he impulsively remodeled a wall at a gate that was scheduled for future renovation.
❾During this time, he also befriends some of Enrique’s friends whom he plays poker with, including a cargo handler named Joe Mulroy, and an Indian janitor (雑役夫) named Gupta Rajan, learning from the latter that he had come to the States in order to avoid being arrested for assaulting a corrupt police officer back in India in 1979.
➓When a Russian traveler creates a delicate situation when Customs try to remove (取り上げる) the medicine he is carrying for his father, Dixon is annoyed when Viktor, whom he uses to persuade the man to leave the medicine behind, claims he misheard his Krakozhian dialect for “father” as “goat” so the traveler can leave with them.

① Franklin Roosevelt was the first to fly in a plane as president!
フランクリン・ルーズベルト大統領が大統領として初めて飛行機に乗った大統領です。

さて Lesson 27 : I can’t come intoday のあらすじです。Anna does not feel well. She calls her boss and her doctor. What do they tell her to do? And will she follow their advice? アナは体調が良くありません。上司とお医者さんに電話します。彼らはなんと言ったでしょうか？彼らの言うことを聞いたでしょうか？病気になった時の表現がたくさん出てきます。
① I am sick. Right now, I’m going to call my boss.
私は病気です。今、上司に電話します。
② I had the flu. インンフルエンザにかかった。 * have + 病名で「かかった」の意味が出ます。
③ I have a sore throat.
私は喉が痛い。*「痛い喉を持っている」という言い方になります。
④ Don’t go to work for a couple of days. 二、三日は仕事に行かないように！
⑤ I don’t want to make my co-workers sick.
私は同僚にうつしたくない！ * 同僚を病気にするという意味で 「make + 人」で言えます。
