米国大統領の空席、罷免に関する合衆国憲法修正第25条 Amendment XXV は今年の最重要時事単語になるでしょう。スペイン語でも確認しておきましょう！なんでも手当たり次第に外国語にしてみる！その意気込みが大事です。

①Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution

①Vigésima quinta (第25番目の) enmienda (修正) a la Constitución (憲法) de los Estados Unidos (米国)

第1節：大統領職の継承 (Presidential succession, sucesión presidencial)
②大統領が免職、死亡、辞職した場合には、副大統領が大統領となる。

②When a President is removed from office, dies, or resigns. In any of these situations, the Vice President immediately becomes President.

②Cuando un presidente (大統領) es destituido (免職した), muere (死んだ) o renuncia (辞職した). En cualquiera de estas situaciones, el Vicepresidente (副大統領) se convierte inmediatamente en Presidente. *convertirse en 〇〇で「〇〇になる」の意。

第2節：副大統領の空席 (Vice Presidential vacancy, La vacante del vicepresidente)

ラスベガスに続いてフロリダでまた銃乱射事件が発生！トランプ大統領は遺族との会合で学校の先生に銃を持たせてボーナスまで支給すると発言。ご参考までに、米国大統領の罷免に関する合衆国憲法修正第25条 Amendment XXV のおさらいをしておくのは無駄ではないかもしれません。果たして今後のトランプ大統領の運命や如何に！

合衆国憲法修正第25条：Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution

第1節：大統領職の継続 (Presidential succession)
When a President is removed from office, dies, or resigns. In any of these situations, the Vice President immediately becomes President. 大統領が免職、死亡、辞職した場合には、副大統領が大統領となる。

第2節：副大統領の空席 (Vice Presidential vacancy)
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of Vice President, the President nominates a successor who becomes Vice President if confirmed by a majority vote of both Houses of the Congress. 副大統領職が欠員の時は、大統領は副大統領を指名し、指名された者は連邦議会両院の過半数の承認を経て、副大統領となる。

第4節：自発的でない引退 (Vice Presidential–Cabinet declaration)
Section 4 is the only part of the amendment that has never been invoked. 第4節はこれまで一度も発動されたことがない。The Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President. 副大統領が行政各部の長官、閣僚の過半数と共に、上院の臨時議長および下院議長に対し、大統領がその職務上の権限と義務を遂行することができない旨の文書による申し立てを送付することにより、副大統領は直ちに大統領代理として大統領職の権限と義務を遂行する。

VOA の新しい Let’s Learn English シリーズ Level 2 の lesson 15 です！今回は adverb clause 副詞節の用法です！難しくない簡単な表現を少しづつ確実に言えるようにすること！繰り返し繰り返しが大事です！

Lesson 15 “Before and After” のあらすじです。Anna hires a trainer to get back into shape. Her trainer does not read her application carefully. So, he offers her a workout program that she does not enjoy. アナはシェイプアップのためにトレーナーを雇いますが、トレーナーはアナの申請書をよく読んでいなかったようです。彼女はあまり楽しくない運動プログラムを提供されますが！

*今回は adverb clause 副詞節！というと難しい響きですが、before, after, when, because, since, if and even though などが使えるようになると表現の幅が膨らみます。スペイン語でも同じです。antes, después, cuando, porque, desde, si y aunque で会話も中級です。

①After you fill out an online application, they will match you to the perfect trainer.オンラインで申し込んだ後、完璧なトレーナーを見つけてくれます。

②Because I’m from Alaskan wilderness, I’m skilled in all outdoor activities of the wild.私はアラスカ荒野出身なので、全てのアウトドアー活動が得意です。

③After our training, you will be ready for any extreme physical challenge.トレイニングの後、いかなる身体強化も大丈夫でしょう！

④Even though you’re trying really hard, you’re really bad at Call of the Wild Parkour.たとえいくら頑張っても、ワイルドポーカーは無理でしょう！

⑤If you follow my advice, I’ll put the speed back in your speed walk.もし私のアドバイスに従ってもらえたら、早歩きスピードに戻してあげましょう！

Lesson 14 “Made for Each Other!(お互いのために作られた存在!)” のあらすじです。Pete and Ashley have found perfect partners. Anna says she has a new boyfriend but Pete and Ashley don’t believe her. Is he real or not? ピィトとアシュレイは完璧なパートナーを見つけました。アナは新しいボーイフレンドができたと言いましたが、信じていません。

*「私もそうです！」肯定文を肯定する時、否定文を否定する時の言い方です。慣れてしまえばなんともないのですが！so の後では be 動詞や助動詞の語順が変わります。

①She can’t whistle and I can’t either. 私も口笛ができません。

②I don’t like ball sports and he doesn’t either. 私も球技が嫌いです。

③My family is big and so is his. 彼も大家族です。

④You have found perfect partners and so have I. 私も完璧なパートナーを見つけました。

⑤He’s good at flying kites and so am I. 私も凧揚げが得意です。

⑥He likes to read comics and so do I. 私も漫画を読むのが好きです。

⑦I can play the ukulele and so can he. 彼もウクレレが弾けます。

Lesson 13 “Save the Bees!(蜂を救え!)” のあらすじです。Last time, Anna went to visit a home beekeeper. She was nervous. Does Anna go into the hive? Or will she continue to live in fear of bees? 前回からの続きです。アナは養蜂家を訪ねますが、緊張しています。彼女は蜂の巣箱に入れるでしょうか？それとも怖がったままでしょうか？

*if 節の復習です。①Type 1：if + 現在形, +will：use the present tense and “will” と②Type 2：if + 過去形, +would : use the past tense and “would” です。

①If they don’t eat, they won’t live. もし蜂達も食べないと生きることができないであろう。

②If I wanted to help the bees, what would I do? 蜂を助けるとするなら何ができるだろう！

①If you want to help bees, do those two things. 蜂を助けたいのなら二つのことをやりなさい。

①If you ever want to see the bees again, I’ll be here!もしまた蜂を見たくなったら私はここにいますよ。

①If I you want to learn more about bees, visit your local beekeeper like Anna did. もしもっと蜂について学びたいならアナがやったように近くの養蜂家を訪ねなさい。

①If you practice, you will become better at them. もし練習すれば、もっと勉強できるよ。

Lesson 12 “Run! Bees! (逃げろ!蜂だ!)” のあらすじです。Anna is afraid of bees. Her friend Kaveh tells her to talk with Caroline, a beekeeper and bee educator. Will Anna fight her fear and learn to love bees? アナは蜂が怖いのです。友人のケイブは養蜂家のキャロラインと話すよう勧めます。アナは怖さを克服し、蜂を好きになれるでしょうか？

* if の Type 1 conditionals have a real event, and a result that probably will happen. Chances are good.：if 節が現在形の事実で、主節が未来形なら、その結果は多分起こります。そして期待された結果はいいことばかりです。

1 If you talk to her, she’ll probably help you get over your fear of bees. もし彼女と話せば、多分君の蜂恐怖症を取り除いてくれるだろう！

2 If you look in my backyard, you will see my bees! もし私の庭を見れば、私の蜂が理解できるでしょう！

3 If you come, I’ll show you.もし君がくれば、見せてあげよう！

6 If you ignore it, it will fly away(Type 1). But if you swat it, it might sting you (Type 2). もし蜂を無視すれば、飛んで行ってしまうだろう。でも蜂をピシャッとしようとすれば、刺されるだろう。

7 If you hit a beehive with a stick and reach inside, you might get stung.もし君が蜂の巣を棒で叩いて中を触ろうとすると、刺されるだろう。

次の VOA も併せてみてください。Prof. Bot の解説は明快です。文法の授業は難しいですが、結局、話者の感情で現在形と未来形か、過去形と仮定形を決めるのです。この感覚はスペイン語であっても同様です。条件法を使うか可能法を使うかの感覚です。文法に邪魔されないようにしたいものです。

「わたしを離さないで」の原作に挑戦しています。いかがですか！案外知ってる単語が並んでいませんか！中学・高校で 6 年間英語を学ばれた方であれば誰でも原作・原文にもチャレンジ可能なのです。原作の各章には見出しがついていません。みなさんで好きな見出しをつけてみましょう！

さて第 9 章は第1部の最後です。タイトルは Tommy and Ruth split and got back together again! ですが、Kathy の気持ちは複雑です。

①二人の仲違いから数日後のことです。What happened was that a few days after they split. *これが第9章の始まりの文章です。こんな書き方でいいんですね！

②後釜は、当然、あなたね！You’re the natural successor. *このような表現も英語らしいですね！

③あの時の私は、ハリーとの初体験計画にまっしぐらでした。Until then I’d been all set on my Harry plan.

④青蝿が一匹、部屋の中を飛び回っていて、私たちはしばらく「ハエテニス」で遊びました。There was a bluebottle buzzing around, and for a minute wa had a laugh playing ‘bluebottle tennis’. *私は英国で生活経験がありません。bluebottle が蝿の一種だとは面白いですね！

⑤トミーとよりを戻したいの！I want me and Tommy to get back together again.

⑥クズじゃなくても似たようなことだ！どうでもいいようなだったかな。If it wasn’t “rubbish” it was something like it. Negligible. *negligible は取るに足らないものの感じです。

⑦トミーとルースのよりが戻ったのはその日の夜です。That very evening, Tommy and Ruth got back together again. *このような表現が可能なのですね！まさにあの日の夜！

いよいよ面白くなってきましたね！細かい微妙な表現が英語でたくさん言えると楽しいと思いませんか！いよいよ次回から第2部です。

「わたしを離さないで」の原作に原文で挑戦しています。いかがですか！案外知ってる単語が並んでいませんか！中学・高校で 6 年間英語を学ばれた方であれば誰でも原作・原文にチャレンジ可能なのです。

原作の各章には見出しがついていません。みなさんで好きな見出しをつけていきましょう！私が第 7 章につけたタイトルは From thirteen to sixteen! です。子供たちは自分たちの運命を徐々に理解していきます。

①13歳から16歳で巣立つ時までをお話ししましょう。I’m talking about the period from when we were thirteen to when we left at sixteen. * ここの left は Hailsham を出るという意味です。

②映画俳優になれたらいいな、と話してました。スターの人生ってどんなだろう。We were just talking about what it would feel like if we became actors. What sort of life it would be. *どんな人生という言い方も What sort of life といえばぴったりですね！

③あなた方は誰もアメリカには行けません。映画スターにもなれません。None of you will go to America, none of you will be film stars. あなた方の人生はもう決まっているのです。Your lives are set out for you. * 人生が決められているという感じは set out がぴったりです。

④私たちの注意をセックスに引きつけておいて、その間に他の内容を忍び込ませる。We’d be focusing on sex, and then the other stuff would creep in.

いよいよ面白くなって来ましたね！細かい微妙な表現が英語でたくさん言えると楽しいと思いませんか！

「わたしを離さないで」の原作に原文で挑戦しています。全部で23章！第1部から読み直しています！原文には各章に見出しがついていません。みなさんで好きな見出しをつけていきましょう！第 5 章にわたしが付けた見出しは Sectet guards business! Miss Geraldine! です。

第5章はKathy が7、8歳の頃の思い出です。その出だしの文章です！

I’m not sure how long the ‘secret guard’ business 秘密親衛隊ごっこ carried on 行われていた. When Ruth and I discussed it while I was caring for her down 容態の良くないルスの世話をしていた in Dover, she claimed it had been just a matter of two or three weeks ほんの2、3週間のこと.
