11月6日朝、アメリカで共和党候補のトランプ前大統領が、民主党候補カマラ・ハリス氏を破り、南部フロリダ州の集会で勝利宣言し、「米国を再び真に偉大な国にする」と宣言しました。「民主主義とは一人の独裁者が終わらせることも、一人の英雄が救うこともできない」もののようです。トランプ氏の人格とハリス氏の能力への疑問の争いだったという人もいます。

バイデン大統領が、次期大統領選に立候補しないこととなり、カマラ・ハリス副大統領が民主党の大統領選の候補者として急浮上、8月22日に候補者指名の受諾演説を行いました。オバマ元大統領、ミシェル元大統領夫人、ヒラリー・クリントン氏等の応援演説も興味深く、次回投稿したいと思います。

以下最重要部分のみ書き出しておきます。これだけ押さえておけば、外国人との会話の話題についていけるでしょう。なお、受諾演説の英語テキスト全文は、the New York TimesやABCニュースのwebsiteで確認されるのがいいと思います。

（公約）すべての米国民のための大統領になることを約束する。I promise to be a president for all Americans.

（トランプ氏について）トランプを再びホワイトハウスに戻した時の結果は極めて深刻だ。在任中の混乱だけでなく、彼が前回の選挙で敗北した時の出来事についてよく考えてほしい。The consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serios.
