さて東京オリンピック 2020 まで半年を切りました。なぜ人は外国語で本を読むのか？面白いから！なぜ面白いのか？日本語では味わえない感動や全く新しい知識が得られるからです。(You can 2020 からのお知らせへ)
ちなみに今年はあの John Lennon が亡くなって 40 年目に当たります。The Beatles をご存知ない方はおられないと思いますが、John は、1980 年ニューヨークの自宅前で銃撃され、40歳の若さでこの世を去りました。
次の本は、易しい英語で書かれた John Lennon Story です。Ladder シリーズのレベル４で、総ページ数も 90 ページ足らず、総単語数も12,460語ですが、興味深い情報が満載です。学歴？ドラッグ？Sex？離婚？復縁？長生き？何が大事？果たして何が人生を豊かにするのでしょうか？
英国の Liverpool で生まれた彼は、5 歳で両親が離婚、17 歳の時母親を交通事故で亡くします。複雑な生立ちからギターとの出会い、独学、そして LSD, marijuana, girls, alcohol 漬けの生活から、Beatles 結成が 20 歳、I want to hold your hand で米国シングルチャート一位を獲得するのが 24 歳、Yoko Ono と出会うのが 26 歳、Beatles の事実上の解散が 30 歳、米国の永住権を取得したのが 36歳、５年間の音楽活動停止を経て再開するのが、1980 年の 6 月、最後のアルバムとなった Double Fantasy の完成が、11月、そして翌 12 月に凶弾に倒れます。
犯人は Mark Chapman という25歳の精神異常者でした。金持ち Beatles を恨んでいたとも、かつて John が “The Beatles were more popular than Jesus.”といったことに憤慨していたとも！
最初の妻 Cynthia とはうまくいかなかったのになぜ Yoko Ono とは復縁するまでの仲となり子煩悩にまでなったのか？日本の Berlitz で半年間日本語を 1 日 8 時間 lessons をこなしたそうです。その John が Yoko Ono の家で曽祖父の安田善次郎の写真を見てどこか自分に似ていると言ったのは何かの暗示だったのかも！東大安田講堂の寄贈者でもあった大実業家の彼も 1921 年に右翼に刺され絶命していたからです。
John と Yoko にとって Elton John との出会いと交流は素晴らしく、John にとって最後の舞台となったのは 1974 年の Enton John の Madison Square Garden でのコンサートだったそうです。John Lennon は次の 3 曲を歌いました。Elton は息子 Sean 君の Godfather でもあります。なぜこの 3 曲になったかはみなさんで発見してください。

この本は青少年向けの本だと思うのですが、その割にはきわどい表現がいっぱいです。学生時代、彼は He enjoyed going on dates and having sex with many girls. However, he never fell in love. He treated his romantic “conquests” almost like a sport.
Jacquelyn と結婚する時まで、Until this time, Jack *John の愛称 had mainly seen women as sexual conquests. He knew that an unmarried man could never become President.
