上級英西時事ニュース講義18

バイデン大統領が、次期大統領選に立候補しないこととなり、カマラ・ハリス副大統領が民主党の大統領選の候補者として急浮上、8月22日に候補者指名の受諾演説を行いました。オバマ元大統領、ミシェル元大統領夫人、ヒラリー・クリントン氏等の応援演説も興味深く、次回投稿したいと思います。

以下最重要部分のみ書き出しておきます。これだけ押さえておけば、外国人との会話の話題についていけるでしょう。なお、受諾演説の英語テキスト全文は、the New York TimesやABCニュースのwebsiteで確認されるのがいいと思います。

（公約）すべての米国民のための大統領になることを約束する。I promise to be a president for all Americans.

（トランプ氏について）トランプを再びホワイトハウスに戻した時の結果は極めて深刻だ。在任中の混乱だけでなく、彼が前回の選挙で敗北した時の出来事についてよく考えてほしい。The consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serios. Consider not only chaos and calamity when he was in office, but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election.

（社会保障）米国は後戻りしない。我々はトランプが社会保障やメディケアを削減しようとした時代に後戻りしない。America, we are not going back. We are not going back to when Donald Trump tried to cut Social Security and Medicare.

（宇宙他）宇宙と人工知能の分野において我々が世界をリードする。中国ではなく米国が21世紀の競争を制するようにリーダーシップを強化する。I will make sure that we lead the world into the future on space and artificial intelligence. That America, not China, wins the competition for the 21 century.

（ウクライナ） 私は大統領としてウクライナとNATO加盟国を支持すると約束する。As president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.

（イスラエル）私は常にイスラエルの自衛の権利を支持し、自衛が可能となるよう支援を続ける。I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defense itself.

（イラン）イランとイランが支援するテロリストから守るためあらゆる行動を取る覚悟がある。I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists.

（北朝鮮） トランプを応援する金正恩のような暴君や独裁者に寄り添うつもりはない。I will not cozy up with tyrants and dictators like Kim John-un, who are rooting for Trump.

（結び）我々は、世界の歴史で最も偉大な民主主義の継承者だ。闘おう。投票しよう。アメリカ合衆国に神のご加護を！We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world. Let’s go out there, let’s vote for it. And may God bless the United States of America.
