VOA の新しい Let’s Learn English シリーズ Level 2 の lesson 18, Flour Baby, Part 2 です！再帰代名詞reflexive pronoun使い方の Part 2 です。この Lesson の解説はあまり馴染みがないかも知れません。スペイン語にしてみても微妙に違います。
Professor Bot の解説は good です。We use a reflexive pronoun when it refers to the subject of a sentence or clause. But we DON’T use a reflexive pronoun with prepositions of place.
1 I was making myself a salad. → Me estaba preparando una ensalada. スペイン語では再帰動詞を使う感じです。 2 While I was making myself dinner, I put Baby next to me. → Mientras me preparaba la cena, puse al bebé a mi lado. スペイン語では「私の隣」にという表現になるでしょう。
3 You should be very proud of yourself. → Deberías estar muy orgulloso de ti mismo. *スペイン語では mismo, mismos を使います。
4 You should be ashamed of yourself. → Deberías estar avergonzado de ti mismo.

‘serendipity’とは、素敵な偶然に出会ったり、予想外のものを発見することですが、ニューヨークにあるレストラン Serendipity 3 から物語は始まります。アメリア人の John Cusack が Jonathan Trager 役をイギリス人の Kate Beckinsale が Sara Thomas 役を演じています。しかもこの動画の字幕はスペイン語です。
調べてみると Serendipity 3, often written Serendipity III, is a restaurant located at 225 East 60th Street, between Second and Third avenues in New York City, founded by Stephen Bruce in 1954. The restaurant has been the scene of several films, including the 2001 romantic comedy Serendipity. と書いてありました。

① 金正恩の肩書きが Chairman of the State Affairs Commission となっている。スペイン語では Presidente de la Comisión de Asuntos Estatales * 日本の報道では、金正恩の肩書きは、朝鮮労働党委員長や第一書記となっている。なお、His Excellency は「閣下」の訳です。
② totally irrelevant は「全く取るに足らない」totalmente irrelevante
③ inappropriate は「不適当な」inapropiado
④ the detriment of the world は「世界の不利益、損失」el detrimento del mundo
⑤ ultimately は「結局のところ、ついに」ultimamente

新聞や報道などで、よく「伝えられるところによると」という言い方を耳にしますが、これを英語でいうと allegedly と副詞一語ですみます。真偽のほどがよくわからない時に公正を記すための表現としてよく使われます。捜査、逮捕、公判等の TV ニュースや新聞記事には頻繁に使われますので是非発見してみてください。日常会話でも使えますので、友人等を驚かせてください。
「実際上」というのもなかなか難しい日本語ですが、英語では effectively (in effect) ですみます。「慎重に、入念に、わざと」というのも難しい言葉ですが、deliberately がぴったりです。また「明示的に、明白に」は explicitly、「暗示的に、暗に」は implicitly が覚えてしまえば簡単です。例文を挙げておきます。このような少し難しい単語は英語もスペイン語もよく似ている場合が多いので、スペイン語でも上手く使ってみてはいかがでしょうか。
1 He was allegedly caught shoplifting in his local supermarket. 伝えられるところによると、彼は近所のスーパーマーケットで万引きをして捕まった。*スペイン語は supuestamente です。残念ながらこの意味の allege に対応するスペイン語がありません。
2 Effectively, it has become impossible for us to help. 事実上、我々が助けることは不可能になった。The work is effectively finished. 仕事はほぼ終わっている。*スペイン語は efectivamente
3 They’re deliberately choosing a cautious policy. 彼らは入念に慎重な政策を選んだ。I don’t think he deliberately tried to shove you. 彼がわざと君を押しのけようとしたとは思わない。*スペイン語は deliberadamente

Mr. Stevens の旅行は、最終章六日目の夜です。Little Compton のホテルで Miss Kenton に再会して、別れて、 2 日が経っています。Miss Kenton と再会した後の五日目の章はありません。切ないです。最終章の「六日目の夜」はたったの 15 ページしかありません。ですが、全文全てがカズオ・イシグロ節の名文です。
なので、私のブログに安っぽい解説を載せるのは無意味です。私のコメントも感想もなしです。読者には、自分の人生もそうだった、あの時、ああすれば人生の方向が変わっていたかもしれないとの思いが蘇ってきます。まさに The Remains of the Day なのです。
