日頃お馴染みの英語を少し掘り下げて考えてみるのは面白いと思います。例えば  ❶ catch up with, ❷ landmark, ❸ milestone というと咄嗟に ❶ (受験で覚えた) 追いつく、❷ 横浜ランドマークタワー、❸ 道路脇のマイル表示と反射的に出てくるとは思いますが！

色々な意味や用法があります。次の文章はお分かりでしょうか！

❶ canch up with：
① 他の人と同じレベルまで上達するという意味: to improve so much that you reach the same standard as other people
・If you miss a lot of lessons, it’s very defficult to catch up.
もし講義をたくさんミスったら、授業についてつくのはとても難しい。

② 後ろから誰かが追いついてくるという意味:　to come from behind and reach someone
・Drive faster, they’re catching up with us.
もっと早く！追いつかれちゃうよ！

③ やり残していることをこなすという意味: to do what needs to be done because you have not been able to do it until now
・I have some work to chatch up on.

④ 罪を犯したものが罰っせられるという意味: to finally find someone who has been doing something illegal and punish them
・It took six years for the law to chatch up with them.
彼らが罪を償うには法により６年を要した。

❷ landmark：
① 画期的な出来事、考え方、発見: an event, idea or discovery that marks an important part of something
・The discovery of penicillin was a landmark in the history of medicine.
ペニシリンの発見は医学上画期的な出来事だった。
・ The landmark decision to join NATO
NATO への参加するという画期的な決定

② どこにいるのかわかるような高い木や建物のように簡単に発見できるようなものという意味:
something that is easy recognize, such as a tall tree or building, and will help you know where you are.

❸ milestone：
① 何かの発展にとても重要な出来事という意味: a very important event in the development of something.
・ The agreement was a milestone in the history of US-Soviet relations.
その合意は米ソ連関係の歴史においてとても重要なものでした。

② 次の町までのマイル数を示す炉端の石という意味:
a stone next to a road that shows the distance in miles to the next town.
