Mr. Stevens の旅行、三日目の夜の章です。この章でも、ユダヤ人女中を解雇した時の Miss Kenton との思い出等がたくさん出てきます。Stevens は、思い出に耽りすぎで、ガス欠を起こしてしまいますが、そのおかげで親切なテイラー氏のお世話になります。著名な紳士と勘違いされ、政治談義に冷や汗をかく羽目になります。

ミス・ケントンに恋愛小説を読んでいるところを発見されたり、彼女の休暇の取り方が変化したり、叔母が亡くなったりする中で、二人の関係が次第にギクシャクしていく様子を思い返します。

①今日反ユダヤ主義が大変やかましい問題になっており、世間には、ダーリントン・ホールはユダヤ人召使にとって禁断の館だったなどと噂する向きもある。Since this whole issue of anti-Semitism has become a rather sensitive one these days. In particular, let me clear up this matter of a supposed bar against Jerish person on the staff at Darlington Hall. *Semitism は親ユダヤ政策のこと

②「近頃考えているところがあって、スティーブンス。ずいぶん考えた。そしてな、やっと結論を得た。今後、ダーリントン・ホールにはユダヤ人の召使いを置かないことにする」‘I’ve been doing a great deal of thinking, Stevens. And I’ve reached my conclusion. We cannot have Jews on the staff here at Darlington hall.’

③私の心の中は穏やかならざるものでした。ミス・ケントンに向かって、女中を二人解雇すると言わねばならないのです。In any case, to return to my thread, you will appreciate I was not unperturbed at the prospect of telling Miss Kenton I was about to dismiss two of her maids.  * unperturbed は毅然とした、動じない。スペイン語は imperterrito。

⑤村に向かう舗装した道に出ました。この家の親切な主人、ミスター・テイラーに出会ったのは、この道を下っている時でした。By and by I found myself on the paved path going down into the village, and it was while descending this path that I met Mr Tylor, my kind host of this evening. *〜していました！find oneself を使うとかっこいいですね！

⑥「何をお読みになっているのかしら、ミスター・スティーブンス？」「ただの本です。ミス・ケントン」「これはただのおセンチな恋愛小説ではありませんか」‘Now I wonder what it could be you are reading there, Mr Stevens.’ ‘ Simply a book, Miss Kenton.’ ‘Good gracious, Mr Stevens. Simply a sentimental love story.’

⑦初めてダーリントン・ホールに来た日から、ミス・ケントンの休暇の取り方は大体決まっておりました。Miss Kenton’s days off had followed a predictable pattern.

⑧私はどれだけ冷や汗をかき、辛い思いをしたか、改めて申し上げるまでもありますまい。全ては、私の身分についての不幸な誤解から始まったことです。I trust I need hardly underline the extent of the disconfort I suffered tonight on account of the unfortunate misunderstanding concerning my person.

⑨執事の任務は、ご主人様に良いサービスを提供することであって、国家の大問題に首をつっこむことではありません。Let us establish this quite clearly: a butler’s duty is to provide good service. It is not to meddle in the great affairs of the nation. * meddle は干渉する、おせっかいする。スペイン語は meterse がぴったりです。

この章は長いので、どうしても項目が多くなってしまいました。
