2018 年度の医学生理学賞受賞決定直後の本庶佑教授へのノーベル賞委員会公式 website からのインタビューです。もちろん英語です。

受賞の知らせを受けてどう思われましたか？がん治療法の分野では初めてのノーベル賞となりますがどう思われますか？これからの課題は何ですか？などなど、とても興味深いインタビューです。是非本庶先生の素晴らしい英語を一緒に聞いてください。

① What was your first reaction on hearing the news?
Well certainly I’m very much pleased and very much honored. 

②It’s the first Nobel Prize awarded for cancer therapy for many years. What message do you think this sends?
As you say the fourth treatment, certainly this is first prize. For me it’s more than happy to see many patients often I can see and telling me you saved my life. That is the most enjoyable and I would say I’m very pleased to hear that what I have done is really meaningful.

③ Biology is such a complex system. It’s totally different from the engineering. We can not disign. Many people try to find the therapy for cancer. But all failed and myself I never expected my research working on inmune system.

④ What is your hope for the future of immune checkpoint inhibitors?
Well there are still several problems but two are most important. One is still only 30% of patients are responding so we wish to have some biomarkers to predict whether he or she is responsive or not. Secondary different we wish to improvethe efficacy of this treatment.
