9月から中学生になった米国にいる11歳の孫が日本語を習いたいと言ってきました。英語しか話さない孫がまたどういう心境の変化かと思いつつも NHK World Radio Japan の Easy Japanese を紹介したのが２ヶ月前！

一昨日メールが来てもう lesson 21 までやったので skype で日本語を話したいとのこと！sound words が面白いというのでどんなものか早速教材を覗いてみました。世界中の人が日本語を勉強できるサイトなので英語に設定して孫とおなじようにやってみました。以下は孫からのメールの抜粋です。

11月7日付けの朝日新聞「米大統領選 名演説どこへ」のように乱暴な英語が飛び交う今年の米国大統領選挙ですが、歴代大統領候補はだいたい日本の小6から中2のレベルの英語を使っているとのこと！孫の英語も早立派なものだと感心しています。こちらも負けないように頑張りたいものですね！

Ohayo Gozaimasu Ojiichan and Obaachan,

My Japanese has been going well. I have learned so much from the NHK World app. I am currently on lesson 21 (nejuichi). I was wondering when we would be able to Skype so I can tell you some of my counting and phrases in person. Would 10 (juji) A.M. your time be a good time next Thursday?

I have learned a lot of sound words in Japanese like Kira Kira, which means glittering, or Gotam Gotum, which is a train sound. I have continued to watch Dragon Ball in Japanese too. My pronunciation of Japanese words has improved also.

Basketball has been going well also. Our offense is getting good, but our defense is really strong! Our first tournament is this coming weekend at Brooklyn Center. We have had fewer practices this past couple of weeks, but hopefully we’ll get a few more practices in before the tournament.

改めて日本語はいかに擬音語 onomatopoeia が多いことか！お星さまキラキラが glittering で電車ガタンゴトンが英語で書くと Gotam Gotum だなんて！ すごい想像力！日本語だとすぐに難しい単語を使うのに英語では擬音語も sound words でいいのですね！
